Last chance tonight to enclose Raetihi pool
If sufficient support is not shown at tonight's public meeting, plans for the enclosure of the Raetihi Pool will collapse. The enclosure of the pool, which would provide almost year-round swimming, has been approved by the Raetihi Borough Council and a strong committee is now needed to raise the money. Of the estimated cost of $120,000, $66,000 will have to be raised by the community, the rest coming from subsidies and grants. The present small pool enclosure committee has put much time and effort into initial planning but has not had much response from the community.
"I'm a bit discouraged after doing all the ground work and now not having the manpower to get it off the ground," said the chairman of the committee, Lance Langdon. In addition to carrying out a feasibility study and organising tenders for the project, the committee circulated a questionnaire in Raetihi and Ohakune seeking consent of the public, the result being that everyone asked was in favour of the project except one. The committee has come up with many fund-raising ideas including a raffle, queen carnival, top town, live shows and a possible radio appeal. Raetihi Mayor Garrick
Workman will attend the meeting and it is hoped those who wish to see the enclosure go ahead will attend. Tonight's meeting will be held in the Waimarino County Council chambers in Seddon Street, Raetihi, at 8pm.
