Waimarino County Council meeting
T opics discussed at the County Council's recent meeting included: Ohakune Mountain Road The National Roads Board has declined the Waimarino County Council's application for supplementary funds for snow clearancefor 1985 and 198$. Councillors are annoyed that the Ohakune Mountain Road, being a legal road, receives no subsidies, but the Bruce Road at Whakapapa receives special purpose money, but is not a legal road. The works' committee of the council is to call a special Mountain Road meeting with members of the N.R.B., Lands and Survey Department and the Taumarunui County Council to discuss the problem. The county has a bill from AHI Turoa Skifields for
nearly $29,000 for clearing snow from the Mountain Road during last ski season. Noxious Plants Officer Joe Martin, the Waimarino County's noxious plants officer, reported to the meeting that weed control is continuing, but three farmers have recently expressed their doubts at being able to meet the costs of the control due to the downturn in their income. "The clearance of noxious weeds is not just to satisfy the council," said chairman Bruce Berry. "It's as a protection of their own interests." The exclusion of barley grass from the noxious weeds schedule of the Noxious Plants Council was described as "just a backward step" and "ridiculous" by councillors. They hope that farmers will see it in their own interests to keep the weed under control themselves.
Following approaches to NZ Railways a further allocation of $9500 has been approved for work along the permanent way to control the heavy gorse and broom germination which has occurred following earthworks on numerous sites. The majority of the pinus contorta contract work on private land should be completed this financial year leaving only a few isolated blocks to be felled during the 1986-87 period. Spraying of blackberry, broom, gorse, barberry and sweet briar along roadsides is being undertaken by contractor and will be completed by the end of the month. Rangataua The Waimarino County Council hopes to be able to make a final decision on the Rangataua sewerage scheme at their next full council meeting, to qualify for the
Health Department's subsidy which expires on 31 March. A Rangataua ratepayers' meeting will be held on 15 March to discuss the proposals for the scheme prepared by the council. The council is also thinking of changing the district scheme so that the section of the township. from Kaka Street to the railway line would become residential, to allow increased -esidential development in that area. Hydatids Officer and Building Inspector Hydatids officer Howard Wise reported to council that the results of his Toxicara Canis roundworm infection, which can lead to blindness, are now close to negative. Late last year Mr Wise had a high infection rate and he will be having more blood tests in March. Mr Wise reported that dog registration will be much dearer this year. He. attributed the rise to the drop in the dog population throughout the country, rising costs, G.S.T. and the cut in government subsidies on such items as chemicals and pills. Rubbish dump Councillors said they were disturbed at the way a Karioi farmer was using the local dump there. Cr Malcolm Whale said that for the last 12 months the farmer had been dumping truck loads of wire. He described the farmer's actions as being "unfair and a bit selfish." Recently, when the dump was full, the farmer left his coiled wire on the side of the road by the dump. Cr Whale described it as "an act of rude selfishness." Cr Doug Bennett moved that a letter be written to the person asking him to remove the coil on the roadside and ' telling him of councillors' concern at the way he used the dump.
