Siggy Bauer to compete in Colac race
Siggy Bauer, Raetihi's ultra-distance runner, left on Sunday for Colac, Australia, where he will be running for six days continuously on a 400 metre track. He has competed in the invitation race twice before. in 1983 when it was a 1000 kilometre race, which he won. and in 1984 when he came third. This year's race. which begins on 24 February, was postponed from last Novernber. Bauer will be competing against 15 of the world's top runners, including Ramo Zabalo, of France, Dusan M ravlje of Y ugoslavia, Canadian Trashul Chern and Stu Middlemen from Amer-I ica. Runners from Austra-j lia, England and Sweden; will also be competing. Runners must be of a certain standard to be invited to compete in the race, said Bauer. There are no stages to the race, "you take your own breaks," he said, and the runner who runs furthest wins. The direction of the race is changed every six hours toj prevent excess strain on thigh muscles. Bauer is sp^iiding this week becoming acclimatised to the Victorian weather, before the race, and will spend a third week there "to recover," he said.
