Touch rugby in the Waimarino

Touch rugby, a new sport in the Waimarino, is to start here and businesses, clubs and sports groups are being asked to form teams. Ohakune businessmen, Don Allomes and Ken George, hope to start competition games at Ruapehu College on 2 March. Don said the sport was very popular in other areas, such as Wanganui, and hoped it would catch on here. "It's for everyone, for those who wish to get fit for winter sports, those who are 35 plus and have retired but would still like to play for fun, those for whom an injury would be disastrous but would still like to play, and for females. The game is simple to learn, and involves no tackling, lineouts or scrums. "It's a game for handling and running with the ball and getting fit," said Don. Although it is preferable to form teams, individuals who turn up on the day will be put into a team.

Don intends that games will be played each Sunday for about 1 2 weeks then will begin again in December with a tournament. The cost per team will be about $30 which includes the cost of a ball and hire of the field, so sponsors are welcome. Entry forms for teams wishing to take part can be obtained from Don Allomes at Ruapehu Outback Adventures and Ken George at Kapai Bookshop, Ohakune.
