Fees hike for park board huts

The high use of huts within Tongariro National Park and other New Zealand national parks has forced the Department of Lands and Survey to review charges for the use of huts. Fees for huts in Tongariro National Park have not been raised for eight years and the department has decided it must charge more. From December 1985 hut fees were increased to six dollars for each adult and three dollars for each child under 16 years. Facilities in the park cost money to build and maintain and it was felt that park users should contribute a reasonable amount so that services are not altered in any way. Senior Ranger Paul Dale said that generally reaction has been favourable, especially from overseas visitors. "People from overseas expect to pay something — they are used to it, but we have had some small resistance from New Zealanders," he said. Mr Dale said that there was some conflict as the NZ Forest Service did not charge for its huts, however as most areas which included forest service huts would come under the new Department of Conservation, they would probably be brought into line then.
