Councils still trying

Local Government Commission chairman, Brian Elwood, has written to the three Waimarino local authorities advising them of the urgent need to make a decision on whether they wish to proceed with the formation on a Waimarino district council. Mr Elwood is prepared to meet the three councils of Raetihi and Ohakune Boroughs and the Waimarino County separately and jointly to help them come to a decision which needs to be made before the commission meets in April. To aid the councils in reaching a decision, Fred Spinley, a retired former district manager of the Waipukurau District Council, is prepared to act as an independent chairman if the three councils approve. At Wednesday's meeting councillors agreed they would like to have a meeting of the steering committee of

the three councils early next month. The Waimarino County Council are meeting at the end of January and Ohakune Borough will meet early February and are expected to discuss the issue at that stage. Ohakune Borough Council attempted to call a special meeting last Thursday to discuss the issue but a quorum of councillors was not available.
