Raetihi behind search meeting
A meeting to gauge interest in setting up a search and rescue team and emergency fund in the Waimarino is to be held in Raetihi on 29 January.
The proposal for the meeting came from Raetihi Mayor Garrick Workman who, at a special Raetihi Borough Council meeting held last Wednesday, said he had spoken to local people and groups and received a
mostly favourable response to the idea. At a previous council meeting, Mayor Workman had told councillors that he was aware that during the search for the missing Raetihi boy, John Brough, on Mt Ruapehu at the beginning of December, there had been criticism that local people with knowledge of the search area had not been used as extensively as they could have been. Last Wednesday Mayor Workman said the meeting could argue the case for the existing search and rescue set-up and those with criticisms could ask questions and disCuss the matter. "We could also discuss the practicality of setting up a fund which may be used in an emergency," Mayor Workman said. All those interested in search and rescue in the Waimarino are invited to attend the meeting. The venue will be advertised at a later date.
