No swimming for Ohakune

The Ohakune Borough Council are to express their regret to Victoria Park Markets at their inability to open the Ohakune Swimming Baths this summer, thus preventing the local children using the baths.

Jubilee Park, in which the baths are situated, was leased by the Auckland developers on the understanding that the pool was to be available for use this summer. However the company has now decided to place the swimming pool project including heating and coverying, in the second stage of the work. The first stage is to be an ice skating rink in the park which is due to be completed by June 1986. Councillors were very disappointed the children would not be able to use the baths this summer and Cr Bully Hays said he was shattered at the news. Mayor Bill Taylor said the company was showing cynical disregard for the community, The council has no money available to get the facilities up to standard and to run the pool this summer. Cr Snow Brannigan, chairman of the finance and administration committee, said that council would need $20,000 to do up the pool and run it. About 700 school children will not receive instructional swimming this summer because the pool will not be available for their use.
