Waimarino search plan proposed
Raetihi Mayor Carrick Workman, at Wednesday's council meeting, said that he was aware that there had been some criticism during the recent search for the lost boy on Mt Ruapehu that local people with special knowledge had not been used as extensively as they could have been. "I wonder if it is prudent to initiate a meeting in the new year with all associated organisations with a view to perhaps setting up a search and rescue organisation in the Waimarino." Mr Workman said that he had been approached by a local helicopter pilot who asked if there were funds available to send up a helicopter for a couple of hours.
"I could not authorise such funding and said no, but I felt helpless. "I wondered if the three local councils in the Waimarino — (Raetihi, Ohakune, Waimarino County) might jointly set up a fund for any financial need which cannot be funded by the police or state. " In discussion that followed Cr Cornwall said that it was unfortunate that the local community had not generated a fund for emergency purposes. "There is a need for a general fund to make immediate grants for emergencies," he said. Cr Punch said that it would be a good idea to formulate a list of people who knew various areas intimately so this would be on hand in emergencies.
Cr Pehi said the Maori people had started a fund last weekend using the marae as a base and this would continue until January when the police would set up a new search. It was agreed that the
three local authorities and other interested groups such as the Red Cross, Police, National Park Board and the Maori community, should be invited to a new year meeting to discuss the proposal.
