Good year at Kaitieke
The main event of the year for the 40-pupil Kaitieke School, west of Owhango, was the school's 75th anniversary at Easter when over 400 people attended. Kaitieke School's netball team was the highlight of the school's sporting year, jointly winning the Southern King Country Netball B Grade Championships, and the B Grade closing day tournament. Several boys were also chosen as representatives for the Taumarunui Soccer Reps, including David Wil-
liams, John Ripo and Jeremy Hopkirk. Pupils did well at the interschool cross country sports day at Ongarue during the year and in a field of over 100 competing in each category: for the junior boys, John Ripo was 12th, junior girls, Nicola Clark 4th and Philippa Hopkirk 10th. Intermediate girls: Karen Duckworth 1st. Senior girls: Sharon Burke 2nd, Kerri Stratford 3rd, Rachel Wiliams 10th, Jackie Ripo 12th, Kirstine Hopkirk 13th. Crew members of the Waimarino Helicopter Res-
cue Trust received their long-awaited helicopter rides the day before the end of term, and on that evening the end-of-year function was held. Awards to pupils were: Kaitieke School merit award for academic achievement Jackie Ripo, Cole Memorial Cup for good citizenship, Rachel Williams, Wilf Cooper Cup for best athlete form one and two Kirstine Hopkirk, Maurice Simpkin Memorial Trophy for the most improved swimmer Emma Ruwhiu and Marie Couper.
