Waiouru maintenance cutback
Routine maintenance at Waiouru Military Camp will be severely cut back next year, Colonel Bruce Meldrum told the Waiouru Community Advisory Community meeting last Monday. The cutbacks are due to a large reduction in maintenance money from Defence Headquarters, said Colonel Meldrum. This will have an effect on all general maintenance work, including house refurbishing and redecoration, road and footpath work and tree trimming within the camp. ★ * ★ The meeting was Colonel Meldrum's last as chairman before he goes overseas. The new camp commander and committee chairman, Colonel Graham Birch, was introduced and welcomed by those at the meeting. ★ ★ ★ All site and ground work on the roller skating rink in Waiouru has been completed, it was reported. A tender for the pouring of the concrete is to be chosen and it is hoped that the rink wijl be open by the end of December. ★ ★ ★ The Local Recreation and Community Development Scheme grants from the Rangitikei County Council were announced at the meeting. The total grant for Waiouru was $2250 and was distributed as follows: Waiouru Playcentre $500,
Waiouru Child Care Centre $500, Waiouru Children's Library $500, Waiouru Sports Club $500, Waiouru Lions Club $250. ★ ★ ★ Approval in principle has been given for Fourth Supply Company, RNZAOC ATG Waiouru to be granted the Freedom of the Borough of Raetihi.
The parade will be held in Raetihi before ANZAC Day next year. ★ ★ ★ A new cleaning contract| has been let to keep the Waiouru Community Centre clean. There has been a problem in the past with rubbish lying around the centre.
