SKIFIELDS

Turoa Skifields were closed over Labour Weekend due to strong winds. Although there were drifts of new snow about 30 centimetres deep at the top of the Giant Chairlift on Sunday, most was blown into the gullies by the strong sOuth-easterly wind. Turoa Skifields promotion manager, Andy Chapman, said the exact amount of snow which fell was difficult to ascertain as the snow stake, which records the amount, did not give an accurate recording as it is situated on a ridge. The Telemark crosscountry skiing clinic and race were cancelled.
