Raetihi, Ngapakihi owners meet over rates arrears
Raetihi Mayor Garrick Workman reported to the. Raetihi Borough Council meeting last week that there had been successful consultation with Ngapakihi Block landowners last Sunday. The meeting was held to discuss rates arrears for the block. Owners came from as far as Wellington, Levin and Hawkes Bay, as well as locally. Mayor Workman said that the history of rate arrears on the block was explained to the landowners. Most of the owners were keen to utilise the land for housing and the council expects to receive proposals in writing.
When the rates are paid, the council will consider the proposals to upgrade the land. Mayor Workman said he was pleased that council had been able to meet with the landowners and discuss the matter with them. "It shows the value of just getting together and talking round the table," he said. ★ ★ ★ Council is concerned about uncovered trucks carrying sawdust in Raetihi. A letter was sent from the council to the person responsible for the trucks, but the practice is continuing. "When we write to people about a problem, it is annoying when the message is
ignored,"said Mayor Workman. Cr John Summerhays is to approach the person about the matter. ★ ★ ★ The council is to approach its solicitor requesting an agreement be drawn up for the lease of the Raetihi Camping Ground. The council has spent about $20,000 in the last four years on the camp and is not satisfied with the return. It was suggested that the camp would be better utilised if it was leased, so that the lessee would do the upgrading. The camp could be leased for a minimum of 10 years thereby regaining some of the profits and having it upgraded, it was' suggested. ★ ★ ★ Council is to apply for the third stage of a loan of $1 12,000 to allow it to erect four pensioner flats in Seddon Street, Raetihi. ★ ★ ★ Because some applications for grants from the Waimarino District Joint Consultative Committee for Sport were either late or not in accord with sport and recreation, they were not accepted, Cr John Compton reported. The value of all applications was $54,000 and $4330 was granted. "We gave most of the applicants a bit to keep them going," he said. ★ ★ ★ The triangle at the intersection of Islington and Grey Streets is to be covered with bark. Originally there was a proposal to cover it with sawdust but courtcil believed that it would blow away and weeds would grow through it.
