Ohakune Christmas carnival planned
Ohakune's business people are already planning for this year's Christmas carnival. At a meeting in the Ohakune Fire Brigade rooms recently, it was decided that all the shops in Ohakune would be asked to hold competitions oractivities on each shopping day for a week before Christmas. Mary Wright offered to organise a Christmas stocking raffle which will be displayed at the Ohakune Trusteebank. Items will be donated by local shops, and shopkeepers will also be asked for donations of around $20 to help fund the; carnival. A suitable area, such as an empty shop, will be sought as the centre of the Christmas activities. A cave will be built in the shop as a place for Father Christmas to sit, and other Christmas activities, such as a Punch and Judy show and the Country and Western Club, may perform there. Bill Te Karu suggested that each shop decorate one part of the cave. A large Christmas tree will be put up on the corner of Clyde and Goldfinch Streets. Bob Norling said new bulbs for coloured lights would have to be bought as those from last year were smashed by vandals. Smaller trees will be placed around the shops. The Ohakune JJrass Band is to be asked to play carols on the Sunday night before Christmas in Jubilee Park, and free films will again be shown. Another meeting on plans for the Christmas Carnival will be held on Wednesday 13 November in the Ohakune Fire Brigade rooms in Goldfinch Street at 5.45pm. Anyone wishing to help with the carnival should contact Bob Norling or Val Parkes.
