PIPIRIKI GETS TWO CHANNELS — AT LAST
The residents of Pipiriki will soon receive both TV channels with colour, and without fuzz, thanks to a new repeater and translator to be set up above the village. Up to now they have received only one channel, rarely with clarity or colour. The cost of approximately $3000 is being divided among the 18 families in the village, about $160 per family.
Some of the residents are out catching goats to pay their share. An aerial will be placed on a hill top in direct line with Mt Taranaki. Two 12-gauge insulated wires will be attached to poles to form a land line which will feed signals to the transmitter, then to the repeater, and finally to individual television sets. According to Pipiriki Park ranger, John Lythgoe, once the money is raised the job will be done by a Wanganui firm which has set up similar structures in the Wanganui River Valley. "In a small community with limited outlets for entertainment, it will be great to have choice of channels and a clear reception," said Mr Lythgoe.
