Wrecker builds workshop

After 50 years of repairing cars outdoors, Bill Cole, of Horopito Motors and Wreckers, is extending his spare parts showroom so he can repair vintage cars inside. The building is about half finished and will be completed when the weather clears up, says Bill. It is being built by Collin Fredericksen, of Raetihi. The garage will have air equipment, a battery and an oil room, a hoist, a tyre changer for vintage cars and gas welding equipment. Bill has rebuilt and repaired many cars in the 50 years he .has been operating the business at Horopito. He claims to have the only vintage car yard in New Zealand and says people come from all over the world to get parts from him. "We'd have 1000 tonnes of parts in the spare parts room, and we've got about 30 tonnes of starters and generators." Horopito Motors is a family business. His daughter Barbara has worked there for 22 years. Bill has also operated a towing service for 55 years "and in that time I've never put a scratch on a vehicle," he says.
