Drastic cutback in summer activities

The summer programme for the Tongariro National Park will be drastically curtailed this

year due to a cut in the Government-subsidised employment scheme for seasonal workers. The programmes, which have been operating for 22 years, have brought increasing numbers of visitors to the area each year. Last year 5081 people attended the programmes, which are based at Whakapapa, Ohakune and Turangi. For the last 10 years the Government has provided employment schemes for seasonal workers, allowing the park board to bring in interpreters, or story tellers, for the summer programme. But this year only four interpreters will be employed for the programme out of a^ total of 27 staff, compared to 41 staff during the 198485 summer season. Ohakune Ranger Station will cut back its programme by three weeks. It will not hold evening talks or children's programmes, which together attracted over 1 000 people last summer.

While Turangi's programme will be cut by three weeks, running from Friday 27 December to Sunday 6 January, the Kaimanawa Forest Park activities, which have joined with the national park summer programme for the last five years, will continue in the forest until Sunday 20 January. The biggest and most popular summer programme base, Park Headquarters at Whakapapa, will greatly reduce its daily activities compared with last summer. Last year Whakapapa offered up to five activities each day, but will offer only two or three this year. A children's programme was held almost every day last year, but this year park headquarters will run them on Mondays and Fridays only from 6 to 17 January. They will provide an illustrated talk on most evenings. The park board will limit the number of people who can go on the most popular trips run throughout the park. Tongariro National Park is not the only park to cut back its programme. Most other national parks and reserves have been forced to cut back, and in some cases drop their summer programme entirely, due to lack of finance. The Tongariro National Park chief ranger, Bruce Jefferies, said: "All of us who have been involved in the Summer Nature Programme are aware of the benefits of the programme, and the decision to implement these cuts has been one of the most difficult I have ever had to make since I have held the position of chief ranger." The head ranger at Ohakune Ranger Station, Lyall Irwin, said in future years, park staff might call on outside help to fund interpreters. "It was too late this year to make any other arrangements, as we had to get the programme for this summer

ready for publication." Full details of this year's summer programme will be available in early November.
