FIREMEN RECEIVE AWARDS
Waiouru Fire Brigade's two-yearly awards were held at the Waiouru Community Centre last Saturday. Twenty-one fire officers were presented with United Fire Brigade Association awards for service by the Regional Commander from Palmerston North, Chief Fire Officer, Michael Christiansen. Two local awards were also presented to officers. Lance Corporal Bruce Hintz was presented with the award for the volunteer fire officer with the best attendance at fire calls and training. TheCumming Trophy for the most improved fireman presented to LCpl. Allan Dixon. Brigade personnel from Ohakune, Taihape, Palmerston North, Wanganui and Auckland also attended the evening. Longest serving member in the brigade is Chief Fire Officer Murray Aston who has served in both the Waiouru and Burnham brigades for 23 years. The Waiouru Fire Brigade has 13 permanent fire officers and 1 2 volunteers. Every fire officer who received a medal or a bar has attended at least two thirds of all training and fire calls. Those officers who gained awards on Saturday were: Two year bars Staff Sergeant Jim O'Brien, Sgt Ross Unwin, Sgt Kit Carson, Sgt Paul Free, Corporal Mike Owen, Sgt David Walton, Sgt Kevin Boniface, Sgt Michael Subritzky. Three year certificates Sapper Graham Darragh, Sgt Phil Kay, Spr Bruce Martin-Hendry, LCpl Andrew Vanner, LCpl Tony Smith, Spr Lewis McLeod, Spr Clive Collins. Five year medals Private Brent Swiggs, LCpl Dennis Thomas.
