Top mountaineer photographer to give slide lecture tonight

On Wednesday 28 August 1985, Tongariro National Park will be hosting a private visit by John Cleare who is one of Britain's top mountaineering photographers. Once engaged mainly in advertising, editorial and industrial photography, he now works largely in the fields of adventure, travel and mountaineering — with both camera and pen — oft-

en among the world's wilder places. John Cleare is the author of numerous books on ski mountaineering and also undertakes lecture tours throughout Britain and America. He has assisted with a number of movte productions on mountaineering. Specialist commissions for editorial, advertising, commercial photography and film — even fashion

photography — have taken him all over Europe, to North and South America, to Africa, to Central Asia and to the 'Ultimate Mountains' of the Himalaya and Karakorum — and to 25,000 feet on Mount Everest. His large collection of photographs, in colour and black/white, is organised as the 'Mountain Camera' picture library and is well known to clients in Britain, Europe and North America. Besides mountaineering, there is coverage of such other activities as skiing, sailing, safaris, canoeing, hiking, falconry and so forth, as well as illustrations of landscape and travel, geographical features, cities and people, castles and gardens, from all over the world.

John Cleare is visiting New Zealand in August and Septembei and his programme is being co-ordin-ated in the North Island by Mr Alan Knowles, Chairman of the Wellington section of the New Zealand Alpine Club. Mr Cleare, to provide an opportunity for as many people as possible to meet him, has agreed to give a talk at Park Headquarters, Whakapapa, this evening starting at 7pm. A wine and cheese function followed by a slide presentation from Mr Cleare, has been arranged. A nominal charge will be made to cover the cost of refreshments. The talk is entitled 'Chamonix to China'.
