Artists urged to get entry forms in
Turoa Art Prize co* convenors — Margaret Horne and Ellen Gould of Ohakune — report a steady interest in this year's competition but remind local artists that the closing date for entry forms is this Saturday 17 August. "A lot of people have been writing in for entry forms but it's too early yet to say how many actual paintings and drawings we'll get as not everyone will submit a piece of work while others might submit the two that each exhibitor is allowed." said Margaret Horne. She and Ellen Gould agreed to become co-con-venors of the Turoa (Ohakune) Art Awards earlier this year when Bea and Dorothy Barnes — who had organised this premier central North Island art award for the past seven years since it was first launched in 1979 — announced their intention to leave the district for warmer climes. Both Margaret and Ellen acknowledge the help they've had from "a very supportive
committee" consisting of Cynthia Dowsett, Bill Taylor, Duncan Harvey, Elwyn Costello, Norma Cranston, Colleen Newton, Joan Wood, Desna Winchcombe, and Val Parkes as well as many other unofficial helpers. The annual Turoa Art Awards have become increasingly popular over the years as the geographical area from which artists can enter has been extended. This year the area will remain the same as last year — from Hamilton in the north to Levin in the south and across the North Island from coast to coast — so the co-convenors and their committee are hoping for about the same response over 150 entries. Each competitor is allowed to submit no more than two entries and these have to be handed or posted in to the Ruapehu Region Information Office, Clyde Street,
Ohakune during the week of Monday 19 August — Saturday 24 August. After the works have been judged by an independent artist from outside the competition area a preview evening will be held for competing artists and invited guests. The exhibition will then be open to the public from Monday 2 September until the following weekend. Openinghours: 10am-6pm daily. Works may be purchased. A reminder about competition prizes and rules: Award for the best entry in oil colour, $500. Award for the best^entry in water colour, $500.
