Turoa Taxis owneroperator Sven Elfstrom of Ohakune reports that his new 7-seater mini-bus service has been in great demand since the ski season opened. On one day alone last week he took four parties of skiers up to the Turoa Skifield and another two groups of skiers around to Whakapapa this in addition to the normal yearround taxi service he provides. When asked if his minibus — a Ford Econovan driven by a single rear axle with dual wheels — required chains to be fitted on these mountain road trips Sven explained that it was "no problem." "I back the inner pair of wheels onto the wooden chocks I carry and then fit the chains to the outer wheels which are raised from the ground it takes about two minutes." He agreed that a 4WD Mitsubishi mini-bus, costing an extra $15,000, may have been a more practical vehicle for icy mountain road work but said that "for $15,000 I'm prepared to spend a couple of minutes fitting chains!"
