STURDY NEW 4WD
Reynold's new Lada Niva from Russia.
A go-anywhere Russian built four-wheel-drive vehicle is the latest addition to Reynolds Motors range of new cars. The vehicle, a Lada Niva is ideal for travelling up the mountain and for the farmers and market gardeners in the Waimarino, says Reynold's manager, Dave Scott. Unlike most 4WD vehi- . cles, the Niva is permanently geared in four-wheel-drive but e"ven so averages a . remarkable 28 miles to the gallon. car, is made for the cold Russian climate so will cope with the Waimarino's climate well. Ground clearance on the Niva is high so it clambers over rocks and boulders with ease and paddles through puddles and rivers with little difficulty. With a maximum climbing power of 58 percent,
most of us would run out of nerve before the Niva lost traction on steep grades. The independent front wheel suspension allows easy handling and a srrtooth ride over rough ground. An innovative feature of the Niva is an under-bonnet inspection lamp which lights up when attached to the cigarette lighter terminal. The 21-piece tool kit and spare wheel are fitted under the bonnet. The rear seat folds down
and the tailgate is held by gas-filled struts. Also at the rear of the car is a reversing fog light, additional to the ordinary reversing lights. Tyres on the car, with deeply cut edges tend to make the Niva noisy on the road, but are very efficient off the road. Top speed of the Niva is 1 30 kilometres per hour, but the recommended cruising speed is 100 km/h. The 1600cc Niva is priced competitively at $15,995.
