Rates row continues
The Ohakune Concerned Ratepayers' group is to write to the council requesting more complete answers to the twelve questions on the rates issue they submitted last month.
At the July meeting of Ohakune Borough Council, the ratepayers' questions were answered in writing, but at a meeting held on Thursday the group agreed that the answers were not as detailed as they would like. The letter which will be sent to the council will ask for more detailed answers — which include input from all councillors. "The concerned ratepayers want a resolution from council as to what they plan to do so we don't have the same problem next year," said Mr Dave Scott, spokesman for the group. He added, "We know we
can't do much about this year's rates, but we want the council to positively address the real problem of high rates and sort it out immediately." At Thursday 's meeting, the concerned ratepayers also agreed to write to the Rangitikei Wanganui Catchment Board askirig them to reconsider this year's rise in their rate. At the June meeting of the Ohakune Council, Mayor Bill Taylor said the sum the council paid to the Catchment Board had gone up from $11,000 to $20,000 in the last year, which accounted for two percent of the borough 's rate rise.
