Success in Wellington for karate club
Selected members of the Ohakune and National Park clubs of Whanake Rangataua Karate travelled to Wellington regional multi-styled karate tournament recently. Thirty-one divisions catering for all ages, weights and grades were helc throughout the day.
A huge number of black belts were kept very busy officiating the three fighting arenas. The competition was extremely vigorous and for most, very demanding. The under 13 years and under 1001b division had in excess of 45 entrants but Corban Tumataroa fought courageously to win the' division.
Fellow team-mate Desmond Chung made it to the semi-finals to be beaten by Corban. Other members results were: Ohakune: Richard Mareikura run-ner-up in black belt boys 15 years and under, Valanique Wilson 1st in black belt girls 15 years and under, Mario Mareikura 2nd in black and brown belts boys 13 years and under lOOlbs, Corban Tumataroa 1st in 8th to 2nd Kyu belts boys 1 3 years and under lOOlbs, Desmond Chung
semi-finalist in 8th to 2nd Kyu belts boys 13 years and under lOOlbs, Lee Akapita 1 bout won only boys 9 years and under, Terry Taumata 1 bout won only boys 9 years and under, Carl Ram lost 1st bout in boys 13 years and under 1001b, Aaron Ram lost 1st bout in boys 15 years and under 1001b. National Park: Kevin Lind 4th mens 5th and 6th Kyu grade and 2nd mens open. The 'big one' this year is the New Zealand Open Championships in Wellington over Labour Weekend.
