Ruapehu's ski slopes are open!

Seven hundred skiers took to the Turoa slopes over the weekend, with several hundred more on the Whakapapa side of Mt Ruapehu. Both skifields had only limited facilities open, but snow on Sunday and Monday made staff on both sides of the mountain feel confident additional ski runs will be open later this week. Turoa had two chairlifts running, one for access only, the snow only being skiable to the mid-station. The snow pump will also be fired up soon, whjch should enable the beginner facilities to be opened. On the Whakapapa field, the first and second chairlifts were open for access and sight-seeing, with the Hut Flat ropetow and the Cinder Track Platter open for skiing. ' Both the Bruce Road and the Ohakune Mountain Road are icy this week and chains are required.
