Sewage problem
Sewage m the streets was a problem discussed at Wednesday's meeting of Raetihi Borough Council.
The previous weekend's heavy rainfall caused the problem councillors were told. Stormwater found its way into the township's sewerage pipes, lifting a manhole and depositing raw sewage at the far end of Duncan Street. The sewage ran off into a nearby creek and was safely dispersed. Cr Tom Punch said the township's sewerage pumps could not cope with overfilled pipes. Cr Cornwall said the
problem of stormwater infiltrating the sewerage system was being made worse by some householders allowing water from house downpipes to run into the sewers. Mr Workman said that although water from downpipes should not be going into the sewerage system, there was a problem in finding another way of disposing of it. Stormwater infiltration of the sewerage system was an awkward longstanding problem, Mr Workman said.
