Sherry raises $1,000 for Telethon

Nine-year-old Sherry Hansen was congratulated by the Mayor of Raetihi, Garrick Workman, after raising $1,000 for Telethon this week. Sherry ran 30 kilometres around Raetihi and Ohakune to raise the money. She was sponsored by numerous residents of Raetihi and by friends and relatives all over the country. An aunt in Australia even se'nt Sherry $50 in sponsorship money. ? At Wednesday evenings meeting of Raetihi Borough Council, Mayor Workman congratulated Sherry on her effort.

Sherry's 12-year-old sister, Veronica, ran with her for 27 kilometres and other relatives also took turns at running alongside the youngstej. In April Sherry was the first girl home in the eight kilometre family fun run staged in Ohakune in aid of the Plunket Society. Also in April she ran 27 kilometres from Waiouru to raise money for new rugby jerseys for the Ohakune Midgets' team. Last month the youngster won the girls' standard one and standard two section at the cross country day staged at Ngamatea School.
