Waimarino farmers against levy
Members of the Waimarino branch of Federated F armers are not in favour of a levy being put on beasts and lambs to finance the proposed promotion of red meat, the branch's president, Mr Doug Bennett, said this week.
The proposal to begin a long-term promotional campaign for red meat was made by the New Zealand Meat Retailers' Federation. But, although Waimarino farmers believe the idea for a promotional campaign is a goo.d. one, they are not in favour of the levy. They believe the promotion should be funded by the Meat Board itself from
existing funds, or if a levy is necessary, it should be smaller than that currently proposed. The Meat Board is asking farmers for an additional 25 cents per beast and 2.5 cents per lamb on top of their present levy of $2 per beast and 2 cents per lamb. The viewsof farmers from • all parts of the country, including the Waimarino,
were considered at a Federated Farmers' Meat and Wool Board meeting last week and a decision on the levy will be made shortly.
