Wine licence for Raukawa Falls Store
The Raukawa Falls Store on the Parapara Road, has finally been granted a licence to sell wine. The application was first lodged five years ago and since then the Kakatahi store has changed hands.
At the Wanganui Licensing Committee's annual general meeting last week, counsel, Mr Garry Spooner, told the committee that the applicant, Mr Peter Simpson, had sold the store, but would carry on with the application. If it was successful, the
new owners would apply to have the licence transferred. "Mr Simpson has been attempting to get a licence forthe store since 1980,"Mr Spooner said, "but for various reasons the application has taken a long time to get here — this is the end of a long road for Mr Simpson."
Licensing Committee chairman, Judge E. W. Unwin said, "After five years 1 think it only reasonable that we grant the application and we do so." The store's new owners, Bernie and Brenda Highland, locals of Kakatahi, . took over the business in January. They will now apply to have the licence transferred into their names. Mrs Brenda Highland said this week that the licence had taken so long because of 'red tape'.
