Children at risk

Raetihi youngsters are in serious danger while walking to the town's marae because of speeding traffic, a town councillor has stated. At Wednesday's Borough Council meeting, Cr Bill Pehi expressed his concern over the risks faced by young children who are now walking to the marae following the commencement of a Te Kohanga Reo programme. Cr Pehi said the danger was from speeding traffic and he asked if enough was being done to try to reduce the risk. Mayor of Raetihi, Garrick Workman, said that the region's Ministry of Transport officer faced problems in monitoring traffic in the area. Although the marae is within the 50 km/h speed limit area, traffic travelling

from Ohakune often continued at open road speeds "through force of habit." "The way things are going there will be a serious accident there," he said. Cr Pehi added that people at the marae were considering doing their own monitoring of traffic using the road.
