Alternative fuel comes to Waiouru
Waiouru has become the fourth centre in New Zealand to have a Methanol pump installed at one of its service stations. The pump is at Pine Tree Motors and will supply fuel to the sixty experimental vehicles which are running on the fuel in this country at present. Pine Tree Motors is involved in the experiment because of its location on
State Highway One. The only other methanol pumps are in Auckland, Wellington and Rotorua. Methanol is produced from a wide range of natural resources, these include wood, lignite, peat and gas. The fuel will sell for 45-50 cents per litre, but approximately seventy percent more fuel is required to go the same distance when compared with petrol. Pine Tree Motors is
owned by Margaret Cross, who runs it with her son Stephen and daughter Helen. They are all very pleased to be involved with the experiment. The DSIR in Wellington and Auckland University are currently doing research on carburettors for Meth-anol-powered vehicles and the number of vehicles using the fuel is likely to increase dramatically over the next few years.
