Markus is skier of the year

A member of the locally based TASCI ski club, Markus Hubrich, was presented with the New Zealand skier of the year award in Wellington this week. Markus has been national men's skiing champion for the past four years. In the Winter Olympics at Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, he was the most consistent skier from any country competing in all three disciplines — slalom, giant slalom and downhill. After the Olympics Markus went to Japan and became the first New Zealander to win an international ski race overseas. Although the- latest northern winter season was disregarded by the New Zealand Ski Association's council, which made the award, Markus again recorded some excellent performances. This week's award presentation clashed with the AGM of the TASCI club, which prevented a number of club officials, including President Mr Bruce Wilde, travelling to Wellington for the function. However, local club members sent Markus a telegram congratulating him on his success.
