Health Board meeting

Meetings held last week with members of the Area Health Board steering committee were poorly attended by members of the public in both Ohakune and Raetihi. The meetings were part of a two-day tour to rural areas in the Wanganui region to discuss the concept of an Area Health Board and find out the public's views on the issue. At the Raetihi meeting, at which the committee members outnumbered the public attending, ex-Mayor of Wanganui and committee member, Ron Russell, explained the advantages of an Area Health Board. "New Zealand has a good health service but it is felt that improvements can be made in many areas. "At present there is a degree of fragmentation in the service and inadequacies and communication gaps. An Area Health Board would be an attempt to improve all that." Chairman of the Waimarino County Council, Mr Bruce Berry, told the committee that he still had reservations about the idea and said that "it could be the creation of another monster." "Big is not always beautiful," he concluded.
