Thirty years ago
This week thirty years ago, livestock instructor Mr W. R. Eaton, stated that the sheep returns for Waimarino County for the year ending 30th June, 1954, showed a bigger increase than in any other county. The increase in the Waimarino - 47,375 - was almost five times higher than Rangitikei County, which had
the largest population of sheep, but only had an increase of 10,000 animals over the year. ★ ★ ★ The Raetihi Bakery was shortly to be under new management it was announced this week thirty years ago. The business had been acquired by Ohakune Bakeries Ltd. ★ ★ ★ The variety show "Fanfare" promised to be something outstanding. The show was due to be staged at the Majestic Theatre on Thursday May 19th 1 955, with proceeds towards the Mountain Road fund. ★ ★ ★ Although it took the honours of the game, Ohakune was narrowly defeated by Karioi by six points (two penalties) to five (a converted try) in a rugby match between the teams in May '55. The game was interesting but scrappy and was played at Rochfort Park, Ohakune in brilliant weather before a large crowd. The Karioi penalties were by T. Spry, whose boot had been invaluable to his side over the past year. Ellitt scored the try and R. Pullman converted for Ohakune. ★ ★ ★ "Children at Waiouru military camp are not a bunch of 'tough guys' and are better behaved than Auckland children." So said the camp's commander when replying to a suggestion by Mr S. S. Preston, S.M., that the future of the children at Waiouru was endangered by a lack of
recreational facilities. (See last week's thirty years ago column). Apart from the one incident when Waiouru youths took a truck and drove it to Ohakune, the Waiouru children had not caused any concern, said the camp commander, Colonel G. P. Sanders. "If wide open spaces have anything to do with it,
Waiouru children are getting a good chance in life," he said. Additional facilities were being built on the children's play area and an additional sports ground was ready for grassing, he added. Youngsters were also encouraged to join the Scouts, Guides and other organisations, the Colonel concluded.
