Sir, Why is there so much delay in making the annual supply of rubbish bags available to ratepayers? A few years ago the bags were regularly available to the public from the Ohakune Bo rough Council by 1st April or even before. Last year they were not to
be had until the end of April and this year it could be the end of May. Surely it is only a matter of ordering in sufficient time to meet the set delivery date. Other boroughs and councils can do it — why not Ohakune?

Sir, I was heartened that the Mayor felt "obliged" to reply to my letter. The rate rise of 35% cannot still, I feel, be justified. It was heartening to see that Marton deliberated long and hard and after starting with such a figure managed to get it under 20%. Such items as tractors and mowers purchase rather than using contractors, I feel must be slashed from the budget. So, too, the return to staff pertaining in the mid-1970s. We all like to see jobs created but we must be able t to afford to pay for them. The Mayor insinuated it was in self-interest I wrote the letter. Please be advised that tenants pay rates, not the owners. I personally do not pay 1 penny cent of rates in Ohakune. No, my concern was, and
still is, and always will be in the interest of the commercial sector who are just not capable of paying these increases. All are struggling to help Ohakune achieve a good commercial sector, but it will be some years before, I believe, their rewards will come. Certainly, being slapped in the face with a 35% rate increase will not assist this process. Can I, therefore, on behalf of all rate payers ask the council to sit down, sharpen their pencils and act responsibly in these financially difficult times.

Sir, Contrary to the view expressed by some locals, the self defence for women' course will not create a violent group of women rushing around belting up men! Instead the course will teach women and girls how to deal with verbal abuse, obscene phone calls and serious physical assaults. It will help them to develop confidence to deal with many unpleasant situations they may find themselves in. Females don't need to be fit, strong or athletic to learn how to defend themselves. The dramatic increase in violent crimes against women and girls means this course should be a must for all females between 12 and 107 years. The tutor is Cathryn Russ, a qualified YWCA self defence instructor from Wellington. The course will be held at Ruapehu College Mav 18th and 19th.
