Oil tank explodes at Karioi mill
No-one was injured when a 3,000 litre oil tank exploded at the Winstone Samsung mill at Karioi at 7am on Tuesday. The top of the tank was blasted off by the explosion, but Mr Klas Kronqvist, managing director of Win-
stone Samsung Industries Ltd, said that apart from the tank itself, there was no damage. The oil tank, which contains fuel for use in the pulp drying process, is the property of Mobil Oil. An assessor from Mobil
was at the mill on Wednesday and will prepare a report on the explosion. There was very little oil in the tank at the time, and there was no spillage. If staff members had been near the tank at the time of the explosion the incident could have been serious, Mr Kronqvist conceded. Because of the explosion,
some of the mill's machinery was out of action on Tuesday and Wednesday, but with the co-operation of Mobil, the mill was back up to full production by Wednesday afternoon. Ohakune fire brigade was not called to the mill after the explosion, as it was considered there was no risk of fire.
