Waimarino Wine Club
Four wines were tasted at a recent meeting of the Waimarino Wine Club held at the home of John and Fiona Lythgoe in Pipiriki. Two of the wines were from South Island and two imported — and it was the New Zealand wines which proved to be the most popular. The wines were awarded points out of twenty. The first wine was a Babich Pinot Noir (white Burgundy) 1980. This had a rather unusual nose and was not a true to the grape variety at all. The taste was rather unbalanced and sour. High alcohol together with the sourness made this a disappointing wine. Itscored 11. Second was a K.W.V. (South Africa) Chenin Blanc 1982. This proved to have a nose in keeping with the wine variety.
Though the taste was somewhat less characteristic with little fruit and some stalkiness evident. This was not a particularly true example of taste of this style of wine, though quite drinkable, and would suit some pallets. Scored 13 (bronze). The third wine was a Hunters (South Island) Marlborough Muller Thurgau, 1983. This had a pleasant nose though not recognisable as a Muller Thurgau. A very light, very well balanced and fruity wine, very drinkable and sweet (fruit sweetness). Score 16 (silver). The final wine, also from Hunters, was a Marlborough Riesling Sylvaner 1983. This wine was very similar to the last, both in nose and taste, though not as distinctive. It was a very acceptable wine, well balanced fruit, acid and alcohol. Y ou would never offend serving this wine. Score 14.5 (bronze).
