Tom Spry in invitation team
Tom Spry of Ohakune was one of fifteen rugby celebrities who played in an invitation team against Manganui R.F.C. last weekend. Tom and other top rugby players, *ncluding former All Black, Scott Crichton from Wellington, Gordon
Tietjehs, from Waikato and Murray Watts, from Manawatu, were invited to play by Manunui to attract more people to their club. Grant Lethborg, a forward in the Manunui team, said it was a good running game with the score being 30-1 4 to the invitation team. A crowd of about 600
spectators attended the game and almost as many enjoyed a hangi dinner and disco afterward, where 150 dozen bottles of beer were consumed. The following day, the members of the invitation team were taken jet boating down the Wanganui River before returning home.
