Visitor from Ecuador in Raetihi

The first ladies' coffee morning for 1985 was held at the Raetihi Gospel Hall last Wednesday. Guest speaker was Miss Meryl Brown who works at an interdenominational mission radio station in Quito, Ecuador. The station, Radio H.C.J.B. which stands for Heralding Christ Jesus Blessing, operates in 17 different languages and can " be heard on the short wave band in countries . around the world, including New Zealand. Miss Brown, who was staying in Raetihi with her cousin Mrs Fay Eves, is originally from Palmerston North but was brought up in

Bolivia and attended an American boarding college there. Her mother, who died three years ago, and father were both missionaries for several years in Bolivia and Mr Brown now assists his daughter with her mission work in Ecuador. In an interesting 45 minute talk, Miss Brown told an attentive audience of the work she and other people are doing in Ecuador and the great effect the radio station has on people's lives both in the country itself and around the world. H.C.J.B. radio station involves itself in many other activities including running a hospital in Quito for those who cannot afford full medical care.

She was able to give several examples of success stories which she said made the hours and effort put in, well worth it. Her love for the Quito Indians, who are descended from the Incas, and for her work in Ecuador, was obvious to everyone gathered and all agreed with Mrs Eves at the completion of the morning, that Miss Brown and her radio station deserved as many prayers as they could all spare. Earlier in the morning, Mrs Corbett of Raetihi, gave an interesting demonstration of how easy it is to do stretch sewing. She showed many of the clothes for both herself, her husband and children, that have come from countless hours behind the sewing machine. Mrs Eves declared the morning closed and reminded those gathered that the next meeting would be on Wednesday 3 April.
