Racing with BULLY

The big controversy in racing circles at present concerns the safety helmets worn by jockeys. Throwing in my penny worth 1 must say sympathy is 100% with the jocks. It appears that someone at conference headquarters has decided that the type" of helmet worn by the great majority of riders is not the type approved by conference. However, some of New Zealand's most experienced riders are adamant that the helmets they are wearing are

far more comfortable and practicable than the two approved by officialdom. No rider is going to risk his health or life by using inferior equipment and it is hoped this difference of opinion can soon be settled otherwise there is a strong possibility that most of the riders will consider strike action. It is to be hoped that it does not come to that and that better sense and cooperation will prevail. This weekend sees in the north racing at Tauranga

where the Bay of Plenty racing club will conduct their autumn meeting on the very picturesque course at Gate Pa. I still think Document will win a race very soon and this could be his chaftce. Two weeks ago I told you about Baytona and how the connections had high hopes for an early show of form. Well it came true for them and the horse duly obliged by winning at Ellerslie last week. But alas, this meeting was an on course only affair and

we punters not able to be at the course missed out. Could be that Baytona will start at Tauranga and if he does, we may get our chance to get some off him. Down this end of the Island, Wellington has its last day of the present meeting and I would expect good races from Apptitude, Encore, and we are still waiting for Both Barrells to step out. Some of the winter horses are starting to appear again and these fresh entries must be watched as they often

turn on a slasher and often in unusual distances to what we expect them to shine in. Remember, Bully tips them first and you read it in the Bulletin.
