Helicopter

The sound of a helicopter flying close to Ohakune from shortly after 6.30am on Monday, caused a lot of comment in the town this week. But there was no mystery to the activity, it was Wanganui Aero Works doing regular spraying of market gardens, although the 'copter was flying a different route to usual, which made it more noticeable to residents of Ohakune. The crops are sprayed to kill aphides — small insects which are found as parasites on roots and leaves. The spraying takes place between October and March and is done during the early morning as that is usually when there is least wind.
