Seizure by Customs may affect Railways contract
The seizure by Customs of more than $300,000 worth of earthmoving plant and equipment from a contractor's yard may delay one of the four electrification schemes associated with the central North Island section of the Main Trunk Line. The seizure followed investigations by the Customs Department into allegations that the contractor had under-valued the imported «quipment in order to avoid paying saies tax. The~ contractor concerned was working on one of the electrification schemes due for completion by the middle of next year. Currently the work was on schedule and the contractor's contribution was a critical part of the overall railway electrification programme. This seizure could affect the whole project if the contractor is unable to overcome the setback because the.entire programme is tightly dovetailed together.
