Power shut-downs necessary
Recent power shut-downs in the Waimarino area have been necessary because four airbrake switches have had to be replaced in the steel work structure at the NZED sub-station on the QhakuneRaetihi Road. The new switches will accommodate the increased loads carried on the main transmission lines from Bunnythorpe, near Palmerston North to Taumarunui. These lines are rated at 1 10,000 volts. Mr John Greenwood, Office-in-Charge of the Ohakune sub-station said "it was a massive job and most of the work was carried out during the week, not during the shutdown." If the switches had not been replaced it could have caused unscheduled shutdowns because of overloading. Work will begin next year on extending the sub-station at Tangiwai to more than twice its present physical size to increase its overall capacity. This is to enable the Winstone-Samsung Mill at Karioi to have more power
as well as to provide power for the electrification of the Main Trunk Line. The shut-downs also enabled the King Country Electric Power Board to
carry out several jobs in the area including the moving of power-poles on the OhakuneRaetihi Road in preparation for the road re-alignment north of Lakes Road corner.
