Racing with BULLY

The Melbourne Cup has been won by the New Zealand bred Black Knight, a son of Silver Knight, who won the Cup in 1971. It was a very rough race with a lot of interference and jostling, and it has been my opinion for a long time that these races have too big a field to give every horse a fair chance. I feel that if the fields were limited to 15 or 16 it would be a greater spectacle.

It was pleasing to see Mapperly Heights perform so well, as did Rose and Thistle who ran a gallant race for fourth. The Kiwi incident was just too sad and I am positive that Snow Lupton would not have moved off his proerty in Waverley if Kiwi had not been sound. Watch this fellow if he decides to have a crack at the Wanganui Cup or the Wellington Cup in the middle of January. The New Zealand T rotting Cup also provided its share of sensation for it was a mere 700 metres from home when Borana pulled off the fence to mount his challenge and there was just not sufficient room for the manoeuvre, the resulting interference caused five horses to fa.ll. Borana stayed on his feet and finished the race but at the subsequent inquiry his driver was suspended for six

weeks. Camelot thoroughly deserved his win as last year he was second to Steel Jaws. This week we have the Waikato Gold Cup being run at Te Rapa and at this stage I would only want to be on Belerophon with perhaps the Quinella being completed by Dun Allen. Down this end of the island, our interests will be at Woodville and with the big Christmas programme only a few weeks away it wil be very interesting to see how some of the better handicappers perform. Punters beware. Marion and Our Jetty are two trained on the track and are reported to be going great guns in training. From Feilding, keen interest will be shown in the performance of Corday and ' Cornwall King. Remember Bully tips them first in the Bulletin.
