Racing with BULLY

The two jocks who fought out the premiership at the end of last season are again having a battle royal at the head of the current table with David Walsh only just in front by one at this stage. He did have a good break at one stage but David Peake is riding at the very top of his form at present and has closed the gap. Several of the younger riders are also riding well, particularly Shane Dye, Peter Fearon, Roy McKay, and a wee lass, Vicky Fechner. All these jockeys can be expected to give punters a good run for their money every time they face the starter. A grave concern to all Racing Clubs is the number of scratchings on race day. Several times recently nearly one third of final acceptorshave dropped out before the starter says 'Go\ Owners and trainers will have to do better than this if they want their sport to climb back to its previously ; healthy state.

Sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances which necessitate withdrawing a horse but too often they are pulled out for no valid reason and we then get six or seven starters in a race and this is not good enough. This week sees the first day of the Wellington meeting and some interesting racing should be in store for us. T rack conditions will play a big part and with the present. turn about in the weather we could finish up with soft or heavy conditions and some of the winter performers may be kept going a little longer yet. However there are some pretty good fresh ohes just raring to have anothei crack. Commissionaire and Burletta are two who need pretty good track conditions before giving of their best. The Foley-trained Ballanchine has really set the tongues wagging and if she can win the Guineas at Ellerslie then we will be able to satisfy ourselves about her undoubted class. One to keep an eye on down this end of the island is the South Islander, Jendra. She is a very good mare and will win one very shortly, possibly at Trentham. Chameau Vite and Guiness are two likely improvers while Our Boyfriend is also impressive in his work. Remember Bully tips them first ... and you will read it in the Bulletin.
