COLLEGE TEAM AMONG THE WINNERS
Ruapehu College has finished in ninth place out of the 168 schools competing this year. The competition is run by the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. Each team has an initial $ 1 0,000 (imaginary) to spend on the stock market. A further $2000 is invested every fortnight up to a final total investment of $20,000. Teams may buy and sell shares in any New Zealand companies listed on the stock exchange. They must pay any brokerage and stamp duty required. Bonus issues, dividends, rights, share splits and all other aspects of share trading are all part of the competition. Schools making mistakes may be disqualified from the competition. This year only 1 1 3 schools made it to the final round and only the top 1 5 of those ended up with a total portfolio in excess of the $20,000 invested. This year's team members were Jimmy Samson, Neil Fredericksen, Tony Tidswell, Bryan Pawley, Justine Dodd, and Mr John Laurenson (staff). Certificates of merit will be awarded to the top 20 schools. Ruapehu College will receive their fifth certificate of merit — one for each of the five years they have participated. Other schools to finish well in our area were Taumarunui High School in thirty-seventh place and Wanganui Boys in thirtyeighth. The first twelve placings were as follows: 1st Fairfield College, 2nd Pukekohe High School, 3rd Western Heights High School, 4th Tuakau College, 5th Nelson College for Girls, 6th John McGlashan College, 7th King's College, 8th Waimea College, 9th Ruapehu College, 10th Rosmini College, 11th Napier Boys' High School, 12th Auckland Metropolitan College.
