Resignation raises problems

Following the resignation of Cr Terry Tapp from the Raetihi Borough Council, Town Clerk, Mrs Hope Vaughan, has contacted the Audit Department in Wellington to ascertain what steps council can take to replace him without the added expense of a by-election. The problem occurs as there were no losing candidates in the local body elections held in Raetihi last year ... all were unopposed. Normally the next bestpolling candidate would step in as a replacement for an out-going councillor. Mrs Vaughan told the Bulletin last week that a byelection would cost somewhere between $2,000$3,000 which she feels is an unnecessary expense for ratepayers. At this week's Borough Council meeting, councillors will discuss what options they have open to them and make a decision accordingly.
