New stationmaster for Ohakune
Babe Kapa, Ohakune's newly appointed Stationmaster, visited the town last week with his wife Annette and 20-month old daughter, Te Riini. Currently acting stationmaster at Kaikohe, Babe was in Ohakune to find government accommodation for his family. He has been offered two railway houses but felt that they were too cold and unsuitable.
According to Annette Kapa, they are both keen to come to Ohakune but as they are used to living in a warmer climate, would appreciate having a house, that is not only warm but also homely, in which they can bring up their daughter. Babe is a Kaikohe senior rugby team hooker and would be keen to play for the Ohakune senior team if required. In the meantime, the couple have returned to Kaikohe with the contacts that they have made, hopeful that a suitable house is offered to them. 'Station-mastering' seems to run in the family ... Mr Kapa's brother Tara also works for New Zealand Railways and is stationmaster at Tokoroa.
