Pedestrian crossing needed

A letter from the Women's Division of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand urging the Ohakune Borough Council to install a pedestrian crossing at the shopping centre end of Goldfinch Street, was presented to the Works and Planning Committee at their meeting last week. Committee members felt that no further decision could be made until a report is received from the District Traffic Engineer. In the interim, Traffic Officer, Graeme Cole, has given his report to the Committee. The area in question has seen a great deal of traffic both pedestrian and vehicular, in the past few weeks. Since the Cedar Mall shopping centre opened

coupled with a record August school holidays, Goldfinch Street has resembled Queen Street, Auckland, on a Friday night. People milling hither and thither, cars pulling out without looking, large delivery trucks blocking the road, buses unable to get into their stop as cars are parked illegally, all these incidents contribute to a situation where pedestrians are often taking their lives into their own hands as they cross the road. The District Traffic Engineer will apparently undertake a traffic count at a future date. Unfortunately, he has missed the busiest time of the year to do such a count, so it will be interesting to see. the results of the exercise. In the interim, we urge parents to watch their children in the area. Remember the road code, look right, look left, look right again, if all is clear, you may cross the road.
