DIVING

Eleven-year old Wayne Te Huia who attends Raetihi Primary School, has been selected for the New Zealand diving team which will compete at the Pacific School Games in Melbourne, Australia, from 23 to 30 November this year. Wayne's parents are both well known sportspeople in Raetihi. His father, Wayne Snr, plays first five eighth in the town's rugby team and also coaches the Raetihi netball team in which his wife, Rauna, plays Goal Shoot. Wayne Jnr started diving when he was eight years old and has been coached since then by Cynthia Binzeggar, from Raetihi. It was obvious that he had talent early on which Mrs Binzeggar was able to harness for competitions. Wayne has won several titles, the most prestigious being the New Zealand national age group title earlier this year. He recently returned from Hamilton where he trained extensively for a week, trying out new dives and improving the ones he already knew. His coach, family and - friends have now commenced fundraising in order to raise $1000 for air fare and uniform. The team will be billeted in Melbourne. Meanwhile, Wayne continues his training, which includes exercisfes on the trampoline and of course diving, in preparation for the 'trip of a lifetime.'
